There are a lot of Chaffinches in the city. In all open places the Chaffinches pick something. On the road to Medeo I saw the flock of Waxwings. [...... read more ]

There is almost the summer in the city, I even saw the Masked Wagtail. But the snow on foothills is still almost knee-deep. Birds are a little. Calls of the Pheasants are audible, the Chaffinches and Bramblings are fed on thawed patches. In apple-trees gardens we saw only Great Tits and Magpies, and once the flock of Black-throated Thrushes has flown by. About the dinner time there were predators. One Golden Eagle. And once two Buzzards (Long-legged one and Upland one) and one this year first Black Kite together soared. [...... read more ]

Almaty. Kamenskoye Plateau.

The searching of the unidentified Accentor was unsuccessful. But we saw a lot of other little birds such as Chaffinches, Grey-headed Goldfinches, Red-fronted Serins, Black-throated Accentors, Long-tailed Rosefinches, Great Tits, Azure Tits, Tree Sparrows, one White-winged Grosbeak, one Rock Bunting, one Eversmann's Redstart, one Black-throated Thrush. As yesterday two Upland Buzzards soared in the sky. Some times we heard the calls of Pheasants, once two hens of Pheasant flew by slope. There were a lot of different butterflies. Ozernoye gorge. Unfortunately, we did not reach the Big Almaty Lake because of slippery road. But in half a day we managed to visit two more neighboring gorges. Carrion Crows, Magpies and Great Tits could be seen more often than other birds. Rock Bunting and Black-throated Accentor sang their songs in low sea-buckthorn brushwood. We also met a small flock of Grey-headed Goldfinches in fir grove, and heard Goldfinches' voices a couple of times. Yet the first birds we saw in the gorge were a screaming Goshawk making off several Crows. It carried a bloodstained pray in its claws, supposedly a Magpie. Sadly, the scene was too short to permit taking pictures. In Prohodnoye gorge the berries at sea-buckthorn shrubs are still in abundance. It seems that besides Great Tits no other birds eat it. At least I did not see any other birds in the shrubs. Several Chaffinches fed at thawed patches among the sea-buckthorn bushes. Carrion Crows made circles above the western slope that was already free of [...... read more ]

Almaty. Republic Square.

2009-03-08 | Askar Isabekov

The murky wet day. Two noticeable appearance were today. The flock of the Siskins more than one hundred birds pecked up birch seeds from the ground. Siskins shied the cars but allowed me to close on about one and a half meter. I even made the video. The second noticeable appearance was two females of White-winged Grosbeak. Both birds pecked up seeds from ground and later ate the gemmas from the tree. These birds were my first Grosbeaks this winter. [...... read more ]

Almaty. Botanical Garden.

2009-03-06 | Askar Isabekov

There is the typical view of the spring forest in the Botanical Garden. The snow is on some places but mostly the last-year old grass has opened. The background birds were Magpies and Great Tits. Tits have sung but Magpies have flown one after another, jumped from branch to branch, and sometimes have concentrated to groups up to ten birds. From time to time we have observed flocks of Chaffinches and Bramblings, once the Siskin have occurred. Birds of Prey were the glimpsing in spruces Sparrowhawk and the three Long-legged Buzzards. The Buzzards were very pale or looked very pale to me. Long-legged Buzzards showed us the aerial acrobatics, flew one after another, ascent and finally hid in the sky. One of the Buzzards later came back, but not soared but nosedived, its flight with almost furled wings looked very darting. [...... read more ]

Almaty. Republic Square.

2009-03-01 | Askar Isabekov

The first spring day as it must was very sunny. There were a bit of birds on the Square because all the thickets were cut. But near the prosecutor's office the grass thicket were stayed and the birds were present. Three Black-throated Thrushes, several tens Grey-headed Goldfinches, Red-fronted Serins, Siskins and one Chaffinch. The Serins and Siskins were eating the birch seeds but the Goldfinches were eating its favorite burr. And the Goldfinches actively sang too, its not loud songs were hearable in many places.
